Students of sexto, octavo and Español I got off to a great start during our first week of instruction! I am especially proud of the sixth graders who have bravely adjusted to the new routines and expectations of Middle School. Sexto and Español I began the week by watching some clips from “Life in a Day”a documentary of YouTube videos filmed on July 24th that depicts daily life in all four corners of the world. The clips were a jumping-off point for discussions about why experiencing other cultures can be thrilling but also, sometimes, puzzling or a little uncomfortable. Since acquiring a second language means experiencing at least one other culture, it is important for students to begin to think about why this can be both scary and exciting. You can watch the trailer for the movie here:
Students in Octavo and Español I also played the accent game, in which they were challenged to identify the accents of many different people speaking English around the world. This prompted a discussion of what the many different accents present in the English-speaking world and how, likewise, there are many different accents for native Spanish speakers. We also talked about how different accents may cause us to make assumptions about the speaker that may or may not be true. You may try out the game here.
