Service Trip to Costa Rica

Fifteen Upper School students from Allendale Columbia had the opportunity to participate in the annual service trip to Costa Rica’s Orosi valley.  During their February break these students, along with trip organizer Callie Rabe and faculty chaperones Lindsey Brown and Andrew DeSouza, worked at the Peñas Blancas primary school painting and repairing electric wiring.

Students worked for five full days at the school and had the opportunity to interact with students and practice their Spanish.  In addition to their work at the school, students also spent an afternoon restoring trails in Tampanti National Park, also located in the Orosi Valley.
These service opportunities were the culmination of many hours in the United States dedicated to raising money and awareness within the school community and also throughout the greater Rochester area.  The hard work paid off for one student who said, “having the opportunity to be exposed to a different culture made me open my eyes and appreciate the important values of life.”
